Fear and Loathing in America – Hunter S. Thompson on 9/11

Hey folks,

Just thought I’d post this as it is by far the most sought after article by Hunter, with many people contacting me on a regular basis about it. While this may be Hunter’s immediate take on 9/11, I would recommend that you also read the rest of Hunter’s ESPN column as it regularly addresses the War on Terror as it unfolded in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in America. Looking back on the events now, Hunter’s column makes for chilling reading.

Fear and Loathing in America

It was just after dawn in Woody Creek, Colorado, when the first plane hit the World Trade Center in New York City on Tuesday morning, and as usual I was writing about sports. But not for long. Football suddenly seemed irrelevant, compared to the scenes of destruction and utter devastation coming out of New York on TV. Continue reading

Hey Rube: Hunter S. Thompson’s ESPN Column now online!

Hey folks,

In case you missed it, the entire archive of Hunter’s ESPN column is now available via Totally Gonzo. The archive has been available through the ESPN website but many of the links were broken, with entire columns vanishing, not to mention the haphazard navigation that made the entire archive virtually impossible to browse through. Well – no more. After much work I have the entire archive indexed and arranged in chronological order and I managed to track down the many missing columns that were in broken link limbo!

So here you go – Hey Rube Archive

Enjoy,

Rory

Animals, Whores & Dialogue Review

If you want to know why Animals, Whores & Dialogue stands out from all the other documentary movies about Hunter S. Thompson, take one look at the cover of the DVD and you will find the answer. The image used is that of Hunter sitting in front of his typewriter, at work on his Hey Rube column for ESPN, which encapsulates the very essence of this documentary. The previous offering from Wayne Ewing, the rollicking Breakfast with Hunter, opted for a cover featuring the infamous Gonzo logo, which similarly reflected the direction of the film. That is not to say that the first instalment presented an unbalanced portrait of Hunter, but rather there was a mixture of both man and myth. Contemplative moments at Owl Farm were counterbalanced by the more hectic elements of life on the road, with Hunter living up to his Raoul Duke persona. Continue reading

The Rum Diary Screenplay? (Updated)

Hey folks,

So I was just browsing Amazon.co.uk and I came across this – The Rum Diary: Based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson. The author is listed as Bruce Robinson and it is 160 pages in length, due to be published by Vintage on September 1st 2011. What really caught my eye though is the synopsis:

It’s 1960. In a highrise hotel not far from the beaches of San Juan, a man is recovering from an animal of a hangover. Paul Kemp is an alcoholic journalist who’s barely seen better days, arriving at the only job he can get: writing horoscopes for failing rag El News. His fellow hacks are mostly crazy drunks on the verge of quitting, so Kemp fits in perfectly. But then he meets the impossibly gorgeous Chenault and her flashy boyfriend Sanderson. Kemp soon finds himself in way over his head, party to shady business deals, caught up in car chases with enraged Puerto Ricans, and experimenting with a hitherto unknown hallucinogen, which will eventually transform Kemp into the kind of journalist known to the world as Gonzo.

Two things – you can pretty much take the above as the plot of the film and having read a 2006 draft of the script it matches it perfectly. Secondly I noticed that this was put up last week on Amazon with a release date of next October. It was then pulled, before reappearing with this new release date. Sources have also indicated that the Dutch release date for the move, Nov. 2010, has now been put back to 2011. The Russian release date also appears to have been put back until 2011.

Damn, damn, damn.

R

UPDATE: The movie tie-in of The Rum Diary is still listed as having a September 2010 release. The UK release date for the movie is still slated as being September 2010. Not sure what to make of all this now to be honest. Amazon have been proven in the past to be incorrect with release dates. I guess we will have to be patient and see what happens.

Interview with Warren Hinckle

Hey there,

Thanks to Sean @ Babylonfalling for sharing the following:

On one of our last days in town my wife and I met up with the legendary publisher and award winning journalist Warren Hinckle at the Double Play Bar & Grill in the Mission district of San Francisco.

I was there to share my collection of Ramparts and Scanlan’s to see if there was anything he wanted to scan for his book, the perennially delayed Who Killed Hunter S. Thompson: The story of the birth of Gonzo.

As he thumbed through the magazines and showed us proofs of the book we talked about his friendship with Hunter; the roots of Gonzo journalism and the culture that spawned it; his tenure at the groundbreaking radical slick, Ramparts magazine, in the ‘60s; working with Hunter at his short-lived, but highly influential, muckraking monthly Scanlan’s; the Kennedy assassination; San Francisco’s favorite merchants of porn, The O’Farrell brothers; and much more.

Because there is nothing that would indicate that the Who Killed Hunter S. Thompson book will be released anytime soon, I figured I’d put this out in honor of Hunter’s birthday (July 18).

I hope you enjoy it.

Peace

-Sean

Animals, Whores & Dialogue: Breakfast with Hunter Vol.2

Great news folks,

Wayne Ewing returns with the eagerly anticipated sequel to Breakfast with Hunter. Anointed as the official “man behind the camera” by Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the critically acclaimed producer, director and cinematographer brings us yet another intimate portrait of one of the most important figures in 2oth Century American literature. It is an invaluable record but its brilliance resides in Ewing’s ability to pierce the shroud of myth surrounding Thompson to reveal the true artist and writer beneath. The title of this sequel – Animals, Whores & Dialogue, stems from the words affixed to Thompson’s typewriter – subject matter that he turned to in order to fire up the Gonzo engine and get into gear as the high priest of hedonism who danced right to the edge of the abyss as he lamented the death of the American Dream.

With a release date of July 13th head on over to Wayne Ewing’s Official Site and order your copy today.

Cheers,

R

Saturday Night In The City – Hunter S. Thompson

Hey,

Thanks to Jerry Nguyen for sharing this short film version of Saturday Night In The City from Generation of Swine.

Shot by a group of friends and filmmakers in Toronto, here is what Jerry had to say about the making of the film:

“We shot this back in the summer of ’09. It came about when the fellow that plays Thompson (Nic Di Lollo) and I were in a pub shooting the breeze, after another short film we worked on. We went out for smoke – I use a cigarette holder and we started discussing Hunter S. Thompson. he called me a few nights later doing a Hunter impression, in character, all the way through, it was uncanny, and I was convince we could pull it off. http://vimeo.com/7935875 “

I read through a lot of Hunter’s stories and settled on shooting Saturday Night In The City, because it seemed like cheapest one to produce. We’re filmmakers which means we’re broke most of time. also because it allowed us to explore another aspect of Hunter which was never really seen in Where the Buffalo Roam or Fear and Loathing – Hunter and women. Though we took a bit of creative license when shooting the sequence in chinatown.

Everyone was awesome to work with. Jo (who played Maria) actually gets a tattoo on camera, which is pretty bad ass, and me and the boys from the Baldwin Street Tattoo shop went on to shoot this:

So there you go folks, I must say I think it is great and would love to see more people do creative projects inspired by Hunter like this.

All the best,

R

Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg

“For a guy that ain’t straight at all, he’s pretty goddamn straight. He’s one of the few honest people I’ve ever met, for good or ill.”

HST on Allen Ginsberg

Ah yes, Mr. Ginsberg was an important member of The Gonzo Tribe for many reasons, not least for the help he gave Hunter when he was writing Hells Angels. I received an email during the week from Noel Dávila about an exhibition that he recently attended which I am sure you will all find interesting –  Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg. The exhibition is taking place at National Gallery of Art, May 2–September 19, 2010. Here is a brief excerpt from the official website about the exhibition:

In the first scholarly exhibition of American poet Allen Ginsberg’s photographs, all facets of his work in photography will be explored. Some 79 works on display will range from the 1950s “drugstore” prints to his now celebrated portraits of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, snapshots of Ginsberg himself taken just before he achieved literary fame, and his later portraits of the Beats and other friends made in the 1980s and 1990s. Ginsberg (1926–1997) started taking photographs in 1953 when he purchased a small, secondhand Kodak camera. For the next decade he captured numerous intimate shots of himself as well as his friends and lovers. He abandoned photography in 1963 but returned to it in the early 1980s. Encouraged by photographers Berenice Abbott and Robert Frank, he reprinted much of his early work and began making new portraits, adding sometimes extensive inscriptions. Although Ginsberg’s photographs form a compelling portrait of the Beat and counterculture generation from the 1950s to the 1990s, his pictures are far more than mere historical documents. The same ideas that inform his poetry—an intense observation of the world, a deep appreciation of the beauty of the vernacular, a celebration of the sacredness of the present, and a faith in intuitive expression—also permeate his photography.

Here is a photo of Noel at the exhibit.

Noel is singer/songwriter, blogger, music journalist, poet…and as you can tell from the photo, a Gonzo junkie like myself. Hunter once described a person into Gonzo as being like an egg-sucking dog – there is no known cure. Noel knows this well, as I am sure you all do. Make sure you drop by Noel’s site  www.noeldavila.net and check out his work. He is a talented bloke and is a contributor to the HST for Beginners series.  (note to self – submit something before Marty lynches me)

Ok for now and thanks to Noel for the heads up!

Paris Records – The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved!

Hey Everybody,

A while back I blogged about this upcoming release and I was wondering how the project was coming along, so I decided to contact Paris Records to find out. Good news – they have just recorded the music tracks for the album in NYC.

Bill Frisell assembled a group of top New York session musicians to record his original compositions for the Paris Records project. Producers Hal Willner and Michael Minzer were very pleased indeed with the results– Minzer described the music as ” a picnic at Cape Fear. ” There’s some eerie tunes comin down……

Also I am delighted that Michael Minzer has decided to kindly share with us some photos from the recording session.

left to right: Ron Miles (trumpet), Bill Frisell (composer) and Jenny Scheinman (Violin)

Willner and Minzer   ” You want THE EDGE ??…You got it!!! ”

I have to say that this project is shaping up to be something really special and as soon as there is a release date I will be sure to let you all know. Hopefully “soon” is the word!

Ok for now,

Rory

UPDATE: Anna Minzer has blogged about her father’s project and has revealed a tentative release date of Fall 2010. To read the article and see more pictures of the recording session click here.

UPDATE 2: Ralph Steadman has the entire Kentucky Derby article including original artwork over at his site.
