- Old San Juan
Johnny Depp has arrived in San Juan Puerto Rico to start filming Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary. He has been seen walking the streets of Old San Juan, an area which should feature predominantly in the film. Walking the streets of the old city, Depp was spotted entering various establishments in the area.
Not much information is available regarding exact filming locations, but it is believed that at least one location will be the Caribe Hilton. The whole thing is due to kick off March 30th.
That is about it folks, glad to see this finally getting underway. I am really excited about this film, it should introduce Hunter S. Thompson to a whole new audience. Glad to see Depp going back to the well, should be an interesting film as I luckily read the book a few years back so I kind of know what to expect.
I’ve read the script and it’s very different from the novel.
I loved this book and look forward to the movie. I just hope Depp plays the character of Kemp straight and not as some sort of HST parody.
Watch your typos; even the Good Doctor himself would cringe at such spelling errors.
I am guilty as charged Cleverly. I’d like to explain it away with a witty comeback but I was drinking like a fish last night and my brain hurts. I’m just glad that I didn’t wake up this morning next to a swampdonkey. The horror of that followed by your acute observation would have proved to be the final blow. I’m off now to hurl my guts up. Funnily enough I was on the rum so maybe this is the old bastards revenge for being a lazy sod 🙂
I’ve been casted as an extra, and on April 8 I have an appointment with the wardrobe people. Don’t know yet if they’ll be shooting that day or what.

I’ve also been cast as an extra for this movie — I’m scheduled for April 5th in Old San Juan. I’ve already been to wardrobe last week. I read the book a couple of years ago. I’d love to see the script if anybody has it available.

so glad this is finally being filmed. it combines 2 passions of mine: HST’s work and gonzo life, and my job with an organization that leads cultural immersion trips to puerto rico. i am on the island all the time and i hope to cross paths with the film crew!
Im an extra in this movie and i filmed april 6 in san juan…depp was there and it was a very cool experience….we filmed a protest scene….not gonna say more so i dont spoilt anything..but man it took us from 7 am till 2 pm to film that scene…it was fun…depp is a very down to earth guy and seemed really into the role….im betting this movie will be really good…for what i saw atleast.
Oh cool! My friend’s dad went as an extra the day before. I also heard something about protests and stuff they were filming outside in the streets. Do you know if they’re filming any more scenes in Puerto Rico, if they’re about to leave? Would love to hear more about how this project keeps moving along. I love Johnny and the story seems really good. 🙂
Hi.I was an extra in The Rum Diary last Friday when they filmed a protest in front of a newspaper building and then Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) arrives.Then I was in a riot scene and I probably will be in some other scenes as well.The diary in the movie will be the real life newspaper where Paul S Thompson worked-The San Juan Star-which now is closed and its building is the one they are using in the movie.
Johnny Depp is a really down to earth guy who everyday smiles and says hello to the people in the crew and the extras.He even takes the time to say hi and give autographs to some of the fans that gather around the locations after the filming ends.Last week he met one of his first girlfriends,a woman named Ilona Fortunato.She met Johnny in Florida when he was 15 years old and has lived on the island for 10 years.She went to see him at the filming location and talked to him for a few minutes.
They plan to film all the movie in Puerto Rico using most of the locations that inspired the ones that appear in the book.I still haven’t seen Amber Heard but I hope I can get a glimpse of her before filming ends.She will be an amazing Chenault.
