Happy Birthday Hunter

Today would have been Hunter’s 74th birthday. No matter what way you are marking the day, don’t forget the words, have a toast and most importantly – Have fun! If the celebrations get a little out of hand, here is some advice from the Good Doctor which might prove useful:

“When you push a car off a cliff and blow it up, be sure to roll the windows down to avoid shrapnel. Also, strip the license plate so you’re not billed for the cleanup.”

Wise words indeed 😉

New Hunter S. Thompson Forum!

I wasn’t trying to be an outlaw writer. I never heard of that term; somebody else made it up. But we were all outside the law: Kerouac, Miller, Burroughs, Ginsberg, Kesey; I didn’t have a gauge as to who was the worst outlaw. I just recognized allies: my people.”

Hunter S. Thompson – Kingdom of Fear

Some of you may already be familiar with the forum we have had here for the past few months. You will no doubt also be familiar with the multitude of problems we have had with bugs and server issues. Well finally I decided I had enough with the crappy service our host was providing so I terminated our relationship with extreme prejudice.  Thankfully I have moved to a better platform which is more reliable and has better features. Unfortunately this means that you will have to re-register in order to post again. We have had thousands upon thousands of visitors to this blog since we launched and I would love if you could join us in new Totally Gonzo Forum. So drop by and start posting or I’ll set the leeches on you!!

Johnny Depp in Puerto Rico for The Rum Diary

Old San Juan
Old San Juan

Johnny Depp has arrived in San Juan Puerto Rico to start filming Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary. He has been seen walking the streets of Old San Juan, an area which should feature predominantly in the film. Walking the streets of the old city, Depp was spotted entering various establishments in the area.

Not much information is available regarding exact filming locations, but it is believed that at least one location will be the Caribe Hilton. The whole thing is due to kick off March 30th.

That is about it folks, glad to see this finally getting underway. I am really excited about this film, it should introduce Hunter S. Thompson to a whole new audience. By the way if you would like to share any information with us regarding The Rum Diary by all means throw us a bone at totallygonzo@gmail.com Any info. regarding filming would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Last line of dialogue from 2006 draft of The Rum Diary script!

Hollywood Elsewhere

Jeffrey Wells on March 3, 2009

Early Bleary Thompson

“‘To live my my life like I want to,’ he said, ‘is the least I can do.’ And that had worked for him. And when it was over, he knew it was over and required no explanation. He had spent half a life blowing his brains out with booze, and the bullet was just a period at the end of no sentence in particular.” — the last line of dialogue in a 2006 draft of Bruce Robinson’s The Rum Diary, an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s revised version of a novel by the same name which he originally wrote in 1959.

I received the Rum Diary script last weekend, and when I read that final page I said to myself, “Whoa.” I mean, is that Thompson talking about his own life or what? Talk about an epitaph.

The Rum Diary, which Robinson will begin directing in San Juan later this month, will star Johnny Depp as expat journalist Paul Kemp, Amber Heard as the temptressy Chenault, Richard Jenkins as the likable Lotterman and Aaron Eckhart as the adjective-defying Sanderson.

Both the book and the film tell Kemp’s story, a malcontent journo who moves from New York to work for a small newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. If you know Thompson’s stuff, you know what this will be — and that’s okay by me.

Hunter S. Thompson: The Conan O’Brien Interview

In the past week or so Conan O’Brien has revisited some of his more memorable guest interviews as he looks back on his career before he takes over The Tonight Show. One of the clips featured our favourite Doctor drinking some hard liquor and firing some guns with Conan. Here is the Good Doctors second interview where they remember that event and also discuss bomb making, fake shoes and how to shoot bears without hitting your assistant !!  – Ron Mexico

Rumour – Jack Nicholson for The Rum Diary!

Caribe Hilton San Juan

Caribe Hilton San Juan

It looks like Johnny Depp has finally decided the time is right to kick this project into gear. A number of details have emerged in the past month surrounding this project – some pretty interesting rumours too! So here is the lowdown on the developments:

  • As previously reported, casting has begun, with a casting call circulating regarding the role of Chenault. The casting call indicated that production would begin in full in early March. Several websites have speculated that Scarlett Johansson or Keira Knightley have been mentioned for the role. This is pure speculation! The role will most likely go to an unknown actress. Trust me on that one. (For budget reasons alone this is unlikely)
  • Benicio Del Toro has also recently stated that he is no longer attached to this project. He was supposed to direct the movie but that has since fallen to Bruce Robinson – writer and director of Withnail and I and the man behind the screenplay for The Killing Fields. Robinson will also handle the screenplay for The Rum Diary. He supposedly worked on it while staying on Johnny Depp’s Caribbean island, which Johnny affectionately calls “Fuck Off Island”.
  • One of the producers attached to this project is Graham King of The Departed fame. This has led to a very interesting RUMOUR that the character of Lotterman will be played by none other than Jack Nicholson!! Now I have to say I am highly sceptical of this but what a coup that would be if true. Jack was a friend of Hunter’s and really enjoyed the Good Doctor’s birthday presents 😀 Maybe just maybe he would do this but no doubt he would have to take a considerable drop regarding his fee.
  • The production team opened an office in San Juan yesterday and sources indicate that the old office of The San Juan Star will be used for filming. The newspaper closed last August. The team are also scouting for other filming locations in San Juan.

So that is it as of now. Thanks to the good folks over at JohnnyDeppReads for translating some spanish articles regarding the production.

Ok for now,

Ron Mexico

PS: We have some regular visitors from San Juan, why not drop us a note or some photos if you see anything regarding filming!

The Gonzo Tapes Now Available for Pre-Order

You can now Pre-Order The Gonzo Tapes through Amazon. The five-disc set is priced $59.98 and you can check out the artwork below.

From Amazon : “Recorded by Hunter S. Thompson between 1965 and 1975, these tapes capture his thoughts and descriptions both as they’re happening and in reflection, as he would often go back to rerecord commentary while writing. Filmmaker Alex Gibney, producer Eva Orner and Gonzo archivist Don Fleming were given permission by Thompson’s widow to explore the boxes of tapes stored in the basement of his Owl Farm home in Woody Creek, Colorado, left behind after Thompson’s suicide in 2005. Fleming transferred the audiocassettes and reel-to-reel tapes to digital files, and they made their way to the cutting room for the film Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Now for the first time these previously unreleased recordings are available in a 5-CD set. The Gonzo Tapes features original cover artwork by Gonzo artist Ralph Steadman, an amazing 44-page booklet full of never-before-seen images from Hunter S. Thompson’s estate, along with memorable photos and an introduction by film director Alex Gibney, an essay by journalist and Thompson’s fellow foreign correspondent Loren Jenkins, and notes by The Gonzo Tapes producer Don Fleming, former front man of the Velvet Monkeys and Gumball who has produced Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Hole, and more.”

I want a copy nowwwwwwwwww!!!!
