Exciting Gonzo news from the newly launched Hunter Gatherers Podcast. Set up to share stories about Hunter S. Thompson from those that knew him as a friend and worked with him, the podcast recently featured independent filmmaker Steve Nemeth, who revealed that a number of Hunter S. Thompson movies are in the works. In fact, one has already wrapped production, Freak Power: The Battle of Aspen, (alternatively known as Fear and Loathing in Aspen) written and directed by Bobby Kennedy III, tells the story of Hunter S. Thompson’s campaign for sheriff of Aspen and stars Jay Bulger as Hunter. The release date according to IMDB is 31 July 2019
Nemeth also revealed that The Curse of Lono is also due to start filming next summer in Hawaii. This has been a rumoured project for years now, with Sean Penn having acquired the rights to make it a number of years ago. Details on the project are scant as of yet but as soon as more is known I will post updates here. But wait….there is more…scroll down.
Another movie project revealed by Nemeth is that of an animated Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It will be interesting to see how this one develops, with Hunter having been notorious in his dislike for “cartoons” as evidenced in his brutal argument with Alex Cox and Todd Davies in Breakfast with Hunter. Originally tasked with directing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas before Terry Gilliam took over, the duo called to Owl Farm where they made the disastrous mistake of proposing an animated sequence in the middle of the movie for the famous “Wave Speech” segment. This included an animated Hunter surfing a giant wave across the desert to Vegas. How they ever thought that would go over well with Hunter I will never know. It will be interesting to see what approach this new animated version takes and hopefully it will be more respectful of the original material.
Anyway, that’s it for now. You can check out the Hunter Gatherers podcast below.
